Farmworker Awareness Week

Got food?  Thank a farmworker! is the slogan of National Farmworker Awareness Week, a campaign that kicks off this week to raise the profile of the people who plant, tend and harvest the food that sustains our country.  It coincides with the birthday of that great labor leader and farmworkers' rights advocate, Cesar Chavez.

Students have played a leading role in Farmworker Awareness Week, now in it's 8th year thanks to a great group called Student Action with Farmworkers which coordinates the event each year.   Student Farmworker Alliance, is kicking off a new campaign targeting food service giants Aramark, Compass and Sodhexo that provide cafeteria service on many campuses to encourage university-level support of "ethical food contracting".   And in Tennessee, students are raising awareness on their campus of farmworkers' rights.  And students at my alma mater, the University of Florida --woo-hoo!-- have informational tables set up all this week.

There are many more great events going on, some possibly near you!  Attend a film screening, march or rally or an open-mic event in support of farmworkers' organizations and help continue Chavez' legacy of working towards justice for those who feed our country.
