Sen. Charles Schumer "is quietly spreading the word [we guess not so quietly anymore] in the immigration community that he has the White House's support to pass a bill by April" to comprehensively reform immigration law, according www.politico.com (Jan. 15). And Jim Manley, senior spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that the leadership still hopes to pass immigration reform this year. The article notes that Schumer is chairs the immigration subcommittee and was instrumental as a House member in the 1986 immigration compromise (and particularly on farmworker issues). The article posits a battle between Schumer and Sen. Kerry over whether immigration or climate legislation will move forward, suggesting that there is not time or the political will to do both this year. The article also notes that both Senators are collaborating with Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina to reach a bipartisan compromise that can thwart a threatened filibuster by garnering 60 votes. Some argue that neither bill could pass before the next election.
Let's hope Schumer and Kerry can get it all done. We'll do what we can to fix our broken immigration system.
