The 2008 Farmworker Justice Award Reception was a resounding success. We were proud to present our annual award to Linda Chavez-Thompson, who grew up working in the fields with her family, got involved in the labor movement and went on to become the first female Executive Vice President of the AFL-CIO --well, that's the short version anyway; lots of stuff happened in between but if you want details you should've come out Wednesday night!
You would have also gotten to hear a rousing introduction by Baldemar Velasquez, founder and President of the Farm-Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), who has known Ms. Chavez for over twenty years. His inspiring speech about her role in the farmworker rights' movement revealed his own life history as an respected labor organizer and minister. FJ's Executive Director Bruce Goldstein and Humberto Fuentes, Chair of Farmworker Justice's Board of Directors presented Ms. Chavez with the award.
We would especially like to thank all our sponsors whose generous donations helped make this event possible and helped us raise money to continue our work on behalf of our nation's farmworkers. Mil gracias a todos!
